Description

AISC 341-10 Chapter F contains the seismic design requirements for steel braced frame systems and ASCE 7-10 Table 12.2-1 sets forth the R values and associated limitations for the various types of steel braced frames. This seminar will address difficult-to-understand seismic detailing requirements for steel braced frame systems of the three main types: concentrically braced, eccentrically braced and buckling-restrained braced frames with emphasis on special concentrically braced frames. Topics of discussion include:

– R-value assignment and associated design requirements

– Revised width-to-thickness ratio limits for compression elements

– Analyses required to determine the required member and connection strengths

– Connection detailing requirements

An example will illustrate the analysis required to determine the required strength of the members in a special concentrically braced frame.

Jason Ericksen, S. E. is a licensed structural engineer in Illinois and has worked as a consulting engineer in the Chicago area in the commercial building and nuclear industry. Jason served as the Director of the American Institute of Steel Construction’s Steel Solutions Center where he was in charge of making sure that all engineering questions about the design and construction of structural steel buildings were answered correctly. Subsequently, Jason worked with S.K. Ghosh Associates Inc., where he provided technical support through publications, seminars, peer reviews, computer programs, and code interpretations and comparisons. Jason is currently a structural engineer with FORSE Consulting, a structural engineering firm that offers consulting services to structural engineering firms including project design services, Q/A model reviews, and software consulting and training.

Web Seminar – HSS Design for AISC Seismic Provisions

September 3, 2014; 9:00 – 11:00 AM Pacific Time

Jason Ericksen, S.E.

Description

The popularity of HSS members has been on the rise and often they are selected for use as an integral part of a building’s seismic force-resisting system.  This seminar will explain the AISC seismic provisions applicable to HSS members and will help engineers:

– Better understand the current width-to-thickness requirements for HSS members in AISC 341-10 and 358-10.

– Learn how ASTM A1085, the new HSS specification released last year, impacts seismic designs due in large part to the cap it imposes on yield strength.

– Review connection considerations (including column splices and bases) when designing for an R greater than three.

– Understand the new analysis requirements for special concentrically braced frames and other braced frame systems.

– Learn about buckling restrained braces and their role in seismic design.

– Understand the benefits and advantages of using HSS members.

Examples illustrating compliance with AISC 341-10 will be presented.
