This seminar illustrates and discusses the detailing requirements for special shear walls and gravity frame members of concrete. It is designed to be helpful in understanding the detailing rules and their proper application. The following topics are included:

1. The distinction between reinforcement for shear and reinforcement for flexure and axial loads;
2. The importance of specially confined boundary zones and how they enhance shear wall performance;
3. The two different approaches for designing special boundary elements and which one is to be used for a given situation;

5. Provisions, first added in ACI 318-08, which make coupling beam detailing much easier; and
6. New, important ACI 318-11 requirements concerning wall piers

Cold-formed steel (CFS) construction has gained in popularity and many tools have been developed and enhanced over the years to assist the designer including design guides, code provisions, specifications, standards and, of course, computer software. This presentation will briefly discuss CFS codes, standards and design guides as well as CFS connections including weld, bolt, and screw connections. The majority of the presentation will be an exploration of CFS framed diaphragms, shear walls, and diagonal strap braced wall lateral load resisting systems which are addressed by the AISI Lateral Design Standard (S213). Finally, a CFS framed shear wall design example will be presented from the CFSEI “Cold-Formed Steel Framed Wood Panel or Steel Sheet Sheathed Shear Wall Assemblies Design Guide” (CFS Shear Wall Design Guide).

Speaker Bio:
Mr. Jeff Ellis, P.E., S.E., Manager of Codes, Standards & Special Projects for Simpson Strong-Tie Company Inc., has more than 21 years of experience in the construction industry. Mr. Ellis manages the company’s code and standards involvement as well as code reports. Additionally, he is involved in product development, provides support for existing product lines, and offers technical guidance to customers for connectors, fastening systems, and lateral systems. He was a practicing design engineer for commercial, residential and forensic projects for more than 9 years prior to joining Simpson Strong-Tie at the end of 2000.

He is a currently a member of the Structural Engineers Association of Southern California (SEAOSC) and Chair of the SEAOSC Seismology IRC Task Group. He has served on the Board of Directors for SEAOSC, as Chair of the SEAOSC Buildings At Risk Summit, as Chair of the AISI COFS Lateral Design Subcommittee, as the President of the CFSEI, and was a member of the AISI Committee on Framing Standards (COFS).

Have you ever wondered if your building has an undetected irregularity and if there are code provisions that were not applied but should have been? This web seminar will put those fears to rest because the seminar thoroughly covers each type of horizontal and vertical irregularity defined in ASCE 7-05 and ASCE 7-10. The definitions are explained in detail with illustrations. The many code provisions that are triggered when a particular type of horizontal or vertical irregularity exists are next discussed in detail. The provisions range from 1) requiring that dynamic, rather than equivalent static, analysis be used as the basis of design to 2) requiring that structures with certain structural irregularities not be built beyond a certain height or not be built at all, if they are assigned to high seismic design categories to 3) setting ρ equal to 1.3 because of an extreme torsional irregularity. The background to these requirements is provided, whenever practicable and reasons why buildings need to be penalized for structural irregularities are explained. Frequently asked questions and answers on the identification of structural irregularities and how they affect the design of the structure will also be presented.

Speaker Bio:
Dr. S. K. Ghosh is known internationally for his work in earthquake engineering. He has influenced seismic design provisions in the United States for many years by serving on or chairing numerous committees and advisory panels. He specializes in the analysis and design, including wind and earthquake resistant design, of reinforced and prestressed concrete structures. Dr. Ghosh is active on many national technical committees and is a fellow of ACI and PCI. He is a member of ACI Committee 318, Standard Building Code, the Masonry Standards Joint Committee, and the ASCE 7 Standard Committee (Minimum Design Loads for Buildings and Other Structures). He is a former member of the Boards of Direction of the Building Seismic Safety Council (BSSC), the American Concrete Institute (ACI), and the Earthquake Engineering Research Institute (EERI).

In addition to authoring many publications in the area of structural design, he has investigated and reported on structural performance in most recent earthquakes.

This seminar will present a detailed and comprehensive overview of the substantive changes from ASCE 7-05 to ASCE 7-10. Major revisions have taken place in both the wind design and the seismic design provisions. Wind design has changed more substantially than at any time since the publication of ASCE 7-95. The reorganization of the wind provisions will be discussed and the changes to the wind maps and the corresponding changes to the load factors will be explained. In addition, the new simplified version of the general analytical procedure under Method 2, which is applicable to buildings of all heights, will be addressed.
Explanation of the new seismic maps will be presented and how they affect seismic design results will be discussed. There are many other significant changes to the ASCE 7 seismic provisions (Chapters 11, 12, 21 and 22), such as changes to Table 12.2-1 (the R-values table) and new provisions for wall anchorage, that will be discussed.
In addition to covering changes to the wind and seismic provisions, the seminar will also present a detailed and fairly comprehensive overview of the substantive changes to the other provisions found in ASCE 7. These include the introduction of performance-based design procedures, enhancement of the general structural integrity requirements, revisions to load combinations, new live loads, and changes to snow load provisions.

Lawrence Novak is the Director of Engineered Buildings for the Portland Cement Association. Prior to joining PCA, he was an Associate Partner with Skidmore, Owings & Merrill where he had the opportunity to be involved with the engineering for the Burj Khalifa, the world’s tallest building.

He serves on several technical committees, including the ACI 318 Code committee, the ACI committee on Sustainability of Concrete and the ACI 445A committee on strut and tie modeling. He has served as Director on the governing board for organizations including SEAOI, TCA and the Illinois Engineering Hall of Fame. Novak was selected as the 2010 “Centennial Lecturer” in engineering and he was named the “Citizen Engineer of the Year” by the Illinois Chapter of ASCE. In 2011 he was named the “ACI Educational Speaker of the Year”.
