With the adoption of the 2016 CBC just around the corner (January 2017), and the gradual adoption of the 2015 IBC elsewhere, the question.

Modern building codes set forth most of their requirements through adoption of a large number of load and material standards. And as a building code is updated, the references it makes to various standards are often updated as well to their latest editions.

With the adoption of the 2016 California Building Code just around the corner (January 2017) in the State of California, and the gradual adoption of the 2015 International Building Code in the rest of the country, the question on everyone’s mind is: what editions of the various referenced standards do the new building codes adopt? The major standards are listed in the table below with the 2015 IBC and 2016 CBC in the middle of the table. (Updates from the 2012 to the 2015 IBC are in red; updates from the 2013 to the 2016 CBC are in red as well, differences between the CBC and the corresponding IBC edition are bolded and underlined).

Note that ASCE 7-16, which is scheduled to be published, is not referenced by the 2016 CBC. We have detected some confusion in that regard in recent times.
