Seminar Description

The 2016 edition of ASCE 7, Minimum Loads and Associated Criteria for Buildings and Other Structures, contains a new Chapter 6 on Tsunami Loads and Effects. This chapter applies to the tsunami design of all Risk Category III and IV buildings, and potentially many taller Risk Category II buildings, in coastal communities in Alaska, Washington, Oregon, California and Hawaii. These provisions can also be applied to other communities exposed to tsunami hazard, including Guam, American Samoa, Puerto Rico, and communities outside the US.

Because tsunami design is relatively new to the US codes, this webinar is designed to give an overview of the ASCE 7-16 provisions, plus a preview of changes that have been incorporated into the 2022 edition of ASCE 7. The provisions will be demonstrated through application to prototypical coastal buildings, including illustration of the cost implications of incorporating tsunami design. The first 50 minute session of the webinar will provide background to the development of the tsunami design provisions. It will also cover the scope of applicability and the methodology for development of the 2500-year return period tsunami hazard maps and flow parameters for design purposes. The newly updated ASCE 7-22 Geodatabase that provides online access to all tsunami-related databases will be demonstrated. The second 40 minute session will cover the hydrostatic, hydrodynamic and debris impact loading expressions and demonstrate their use through example applications. Changes introduced to the ASCE 7-22 edition will be highlighted. The third 40 minute session will present tsunami design examples of prototypical coastal buildings in Seaside, Oregon and Hilo, Hawaii, including illustration of tsunami push-over analysis suitable for performance based tsunami design and assessment. There will be time after each session to ask questions.

Speaker Bio

Dr. Robertson is Professor of Structural Engineering at the University of Hawaii. Since 2001, a considerable amount of his research has focused on the response of buildings and other structures to tsunami loads. He has participated in numerous post-tsunami reconnaissance surveys, and serves as a member of the ASCE 7 Tsunami Loads and Effects Subcommittee. ASCE has commissioned Dr. Robertson to write a Guide to the Tsunami Design Provisions of ASCE 7-16, the first manual that explains the background, development, and application of the tsunami provisions of Chapter 6 of the ASCE 7-16 Standard, including reference to laboratory research and field surveys that contributed to development of the tsunami design provisions. Dr. Robertson is the Arthur N. L. Chiu Distinguished Professor of Structural Engineering at the University of Hawaii.
