Seminar Description

Reinforced concrete (RC) frames with masonry infill walls are commonly found in seismically active regions. Past earthquakes have shown the vulnerability of this type of structures even under moderate ground excitations, causing casualties and high economic losses. This web seminar will focus on the evaluation and design of infilled RC frame structures following the guidelines specified in ASCE 41-17 and TMS 402 to understand their in-plane and out-of-plane behavior during an earthquake. This presentation will also cover a modeling approach using diagonal struts to represent the infills, which can be used to predict the seismic performance of such structures.
The views and opinions expressed in this seminar are those of the speaker(s) and do not necessarily reflect those held by S. K. Ghosh Associates LLC.

Speaker Bio

Dr. Supratik Bose is a Structural Consultant at S.K. Ghosh and Associates in Palatine, Illinois. He earned his Ph.D. degree from University at Buffalo, where his focus was to predict the seismic performance of infilled RC frame buildings. He visited Nepal and Mexico after the earthquakes as part of the reconnaissance team to study the performance of such structures. He was also involved in research projects funded by FEMA, NSF, and USGS to develop frameworks to evaluate the seismic vulnerability of existing masonry infilled RC frame buildings. Currently, at SKGA, he is participating in consulting work primarily related to building code provisions in addition to the development and upgrade of computer programs.
